In many organisations the IT team  is too busy focusing on BAU (keeping the lights on, running service management and managing suppliers) and contributing to multiple projects for new initiatives and deliverables.

Alson in in most businesses, the IT technology strategies are written independently of the greater business strategy, and without the input of business partners and even much input by the IT teams themselves .

To address this issue , organizations need to become a technology literate business, irrespective of product or service they offer. These organisations all need a proactive approach to Business/IT alignment.

Many CIOs believe the IT strategic plan needs to make sure the organisation is getting value from all the new technology innovations and supporting IT solutions, but they need to make sure that IT is delivering solutions that are useful and valuable to the organisation.

The benefits of better alignment between business and IT allow specific improvements in measurable activities including:

  • Faster time-to-market

  • Increased profitability

  • Better customer experience

  • Improved collaboration

  • Greater industry and IT agility

  • Strategic technological transformation

Business and IT alignment is a process and is usually series of “understand, develop, try and refine ” cycles that gradually moves towards alignment.

  • Identify Business Drivers – understanding the business needs that require IT enablement.

  • Create IT Requirement – understanding how IT solutions can support the new business’ needs, and identifies the IT capability required to meet business priorities

  • Review Current Business/IT Alignment – understanding how the current IT capability compares to the envisioned IT capability

  • Identify Gaps in Alignment – understanding the current and desired IT capability and identify any misalignment and identify the potential fixes

  • Prioritise IT Initiatives – understanding and prioritizing the fixes

  • Evaluate Implementation Options – understanding the prioritized list of “fixes” or IT Initiatives and create a planning roadmap for IT

  • Create Migration Plan – understanding the migration plan for the IT roadmap including deliverables, responsibility, timing etc.

  • Review Final Alignment - understanding the connection between the changing business needs and the ongoing implementation of the IT solutions in response.
